Detroit is the largest city, as well as the capitol of the state of Michigan. It was founded in 1701 by the French, and was incorporated as a U.S. city in 1806. It is the only U.S. city to look south to Canada. Known as the world’s traditional automotive center, use of the city’s name, “Detroit”, is often a metonym for the U.S. auto industry, and is also an important source of popular music legacies. Two nicknames that derive from these industries are The Motor City and Motown respectively. Since the 1940’s, live music has been a point of pride for Motown. John Lee Hooker became a long time resident at this time. Important music events in the city include: the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the Motor City Music Conference (MC2), the Urban Organic Music Conference, the Concert of Colors, and the hip-hop Summer Jamz festival
